Why Constantly Saying That You Are 'Busy' Can Be Detrimental For Your Career

I hear people repeating all the time -to the point of complaining- that they are BUSY. Now when you constantly say that you are 'busy', all you are doing is confessing your own inability or incapacity to efficiently manage your time, and also that your current workload exceeds your capacity.

This constant repetition and confession create psychological doubts in your own head and the minds of those around you about your own capacity and efficiency. I used to have this discussion with my direct reports and told them that if they are working at their max capacity, then they cannot be given any more responsibility or promotion.

Next time you are tempted to announce to the four corners of the world that you are 'busy', stop yourself for a moment and analyze what kind of message you are sending to the listeners. - Gustavo Bilbao
